October 26th is Domestic Violence Awareness Day

Domestic violence is a serious problem here in the United States. More than 20,000 calls to domestic violence hotlines are made each day, and it is estimated that more than 10 million women and men suffer abuse from an intimate partner each year. In many situations, children suffer from domestic violence as well. According to statistics compiled by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV), approximately one in 15 children are exposed to domestic violence each year, nearly 90 percent of whom will be eyewitnesses to violence.

Rape, stalking, and physical abuse can have an immense impact on the physical and mental health of an individual and can have devastating consequences that can tear families apart.

Tonight, October 26, the Maxwell Hall Memorial United Methodist Church, located at 601 Centre Street in Downtown Fernandina, will be hosting a Mission Study on Domestic Violence. Sponsored by the United Methodist Women of Memorial United Methodist Church, the event will take place at 6:00 p.m. and will feature three guest speakers. This study is sure to be informative and is an invaluable resource for our community.
